December 2015
  • Dr. Garrido attended a planning meeting for the new Peer Support Trauma Response Team at Aurora PD. She also attended the general Peer Support Team meetings for Greeley PD and Northglenn PD.
  • Dr. Garrido was called to respond following officer-involved shootings with several departments and provided one-on-one check-ins and follow-up debrief services.

November 2015
  • South Metro Fire Rescue hosted a 40-hr. POST certified Peer Support Training the week of November 30th. The training was faciitated by Drs. Nicoletti, Axelrod, Brower, Garrido, and McMann.
October 2015
  • Drs. Nicoletti and Garrido along with Deputy Chief Quinones of the Denver Police Department presented at the IACP Conference in Chicago, IL on Law Enforcement Families-The Forgotten Community: How to Support Law Enforcement Families During Times of Community Outrage
  • Dr. Nicoletti also presented on a panel at the conference addressing Building Resiliency Before Mass Casualty Events.

September 2015
  • Nicoletti-Flater Associates hosted a Users Conference on Wednesday, September 9th from 8am-5pm.  This conference was FREE and open, by invitation, to all Public Safety Agencies.  It was very well attended by agencies across the state and the staff wishes to thank all of those who were in attendance.  
  • Dr. Deb Tasci attended the "Line of Duty Death Training" on September 2, 2015.  This training was for the City and County of Denver, sponsored by the Denver Police Peer Support Team.

August 2015
  • Drs. Nicoletti, Garrido, and Axelrod also attended the 2015 Police & Public Safety Psychology Conference: "Contemporary Issues Facing Police Psychologists and Law Enforcement" in Toronto on August 5th.  Thank you to the Toronto Police Service for hosting this event and for their willingness to provide us a great tour of some of their facilities.

  • Drs. Nicoletti, Axelrod, Brower, and Garrido presented a 40-hour POST-certified Peer Support course, hosted by the Jefferson County Sheriff's Office, the week of November 10th.  Departments participating in this training included: Aurora PD, Aurora Dispatch, Arapahoe SO, Adams SO, Greeley PD, Glendale PD, JeffCO DA, and JeffCO SO.

  • Dr. Deb Tasci attended the 2.5 day HIMS (the FAA approved alcoholic pilot) seminar this month and 4 members of the DPD staff also attended. Additional progress is being made on adapting this model for DPD officers.  Policy and protocols are being written and training is in the process of development for the Resiliency Program.
  • Dr. Deb Tasci also attended the National EMDR conference in Denver and she is happy to report that research continues to validate the method.  
  • Anne Field became a member of the Association of Threat Assessment Professionals (ATAP) and attended the ATAP Conference Body Language Seminar
  • Anne Field also attended the 2014 Annual Conference of the Colorado Association for Marriage and Family Therapy 
  • Dr. Garrido attended the Greeley Police Department Peer Support Team meeting and assisted the department with critical incident debriefing

Dr. Jaime Brower is now the proud owner and trainer of Gracie, who was selected from a litter in Tennessee. Both of Gracie's parents are AKC Therapy Dog Certified.  She is currently undergoing intensive training to become a service dog for law enforcement officers.  Early research on the benefits of service/therapy dogs suggests health benefits that include: a decrease on the onset/severity/progression of stress-related conditions, reduction in blood- pressure and heart rate, decreased muscle tension, enhanced levels of dopamine and endorphins, and a reduction in cortisol levels. 
  • Dr. Garrido facilitated multiple trainings for agencies from across the state hosted by the Denver Communications Center. Training topics included: Special Populations, Communication and De-escalation, and Suicide/Suicide by Cop.  She also provided several Critical Incident Response trainings to the Greeley Police Department.
  • Dr. Deb Tasci has been meeting regularly with the DPD Resiliency Program designed to assist officers with substance abuse disorders.
  • Dr. Tasci also completed a 5-day training at the Cape Cod Institute titled The Clinical Applications of the Polyvagal Theory: The Transformative Power of Feeling Safe by Dr. Stephen Porges.
  • Dr. Shawn Knadler consulted with Rocky Mountain Human Services and the Veterans Trauma Court regarding the assessment and needs of veterans 
  • Dr. Knadler also supported several departments by providing debriefings of critical incidents 

June 2014
  • Nicoletti-Flater Associates staff assisted the Denver Police Department in rolling out their new CIT program.

  • Dr. Garrido consulted with Greeley PD as they reviewed and updated their Officer-Involved Shooting guidelines to ensure they represent industry best practices.
  • Dr. Garrido also consulted with ERCM Consultants on campus violence prevention and response policy review for a local community college.
  • Drs. Nicoletti and Garrido consulted on multiple direct and indirect risk assessments for organizations across the country

May 2014

  • Drs. Axelrod and Kruml began pre-deployment screenings for the National Science Foundation's 2014-2015 Antarctic season.
  • Dr. Sara Garrido attended the Greeley PD and Aurora PD Peer Support Team meetings and also assisted GPD with interviewing team applicants-congratulations to their three new team members!
  • Drs. Nicoletti and Garrido began providing Workplace Violence Prevention consultation services to a government agency

  • Dr. Kruml also facilitated a regional CIT training on Commuication and De-Escalation hosted by Denver Sheriff's Department
  • She also conducted a Myers-Briggs training for a local Victim Advocate Board of Directors
  • Additionally, Joelle consulted with a local fire department regarding the pre-employment process and expanded services for their growing agency.

Dr. John Nicoletti was an invited speaker for two sessions at the conference:  1) For the Police Psychological Services Section Track covering Psychological Responses to Mass Casualty Shootings along with Aurora Police Chief Daniel Oates and 2) For the Chief Executive Track covering the topic of Predicting and Preventing the Active Shooter

Dr. Evan Axelrod also presented to the Police Psychological Services Section Track on Preparing Officers for the Psychological Impact of Large-Scale and Lengthy Operational Events: Case Studies from Labor Disputes, Protests, and Other High Profile Extended Events.

  • Drs. Axelrod and Kruml worked with more than 35 different departments for psychological evaluations.  The types of evals ranged from police officer, detention deputy, medical center police officer, booking clerk/property technician, dispatcher, call taker, firefighter, fire Marshall, dispatcher, 911 operator, chalplain, engineer, code enforcement officer, Antarctic deployment, SWAT promotions, parole officer, mediolegal death investigator, administrative assistants, records specialists, armed school security officer, communications technicans, and crime scene investigators.
    • Additionally, they consulted with over a dozen departments on the pre-employment process.  
    • They traveled and conducted pre-employment psychological screenings all over the state of Colorado and in New Mexico.
  • Dr. Jaime Brower completed a number of trainings including:
    • Denver Police Department: Wellness Training
    • Denver Police Academy: Learning in High Stress Environments
    • Aurora Police Department Academy: Peak Performance, Learning in High Stress Environments, and Family Night  
  • Dr. Deb Tasci completed the accelerated experiential dynamic psychotherapy immersion course (Level 1).

Drs. Nicoletti and Axelrod along with intern Shawn Knadler, MA attended the 2nd annual Carson J. Spencer Foundation and mantherapy.org "Guys Night Out" Event,supporting Gentlemental Health™ and the prevention of suicide & promotion of wellness among working-age men.
  • Dr. John Nicoletti spoke at The Briefings: A National School Safety Leadership Symposium at Columbine.  
    • Drs. Garrido and Kruml as well as Anne Field, LCSW were also in attendance at the symposium. 
  • Drs. Nicoletti and Garrido consulted with several national corporations as well as a school district for threat assessments.
  • Dr. Evan Axelrod facilitated CIT for Denver Communications and the Denver Police Department and conducted Peer Support Training, hosted by the Arvada Police Department.
  • Dr. Axelrod also responded to an office involved shooting.
  • Psychotherapist, Anne C. Field, LCSW, just finished up six months of supervising Ms. Kasey Lundgrahm so that Ms. Lundgrahm could obtain her Colorado licensure as a Professional Counselor.  Ms. Lundgrahm is currently a Victims Advocate with the Denver Police Department.  Congratulations Kasey for completing the supervision portion toward your license as a Professional Counselor!
  • Dr. Sara Garrido attended the Aurora Police Department's Peer Support Meeting.
  • Dr. Joelle Kruml facilitated two trainings for Arapahoe County Sheriff's Department.  One on Communication & De-Escalation Skills and the other on Suicide & Suicide by Cop.
  • Dr. Joelle Kruml also consulted with a major financial company and provided support to laid-off employees.
  • Drs. Kruml and Axelrod conducted pre-employments for over 31 different departments.

  • Drs. Axelrod and Brower facilitated a 40-Hour Peer Support Training hosted by Westminster PD.
  • Drs. Axelrod and Kruml completed pre-employment screenings for the following positions: police, fire, detention deputy, patrol deputy, dispatch, Antarctica, forensic scientist, records technician, Chief of Police, Veteran's Administration Police, administrative assistant, SWAT team members, code enforcement, security officer, animal control, victim advocate, communications center manager, I.T. Administrator, and 911 operator.
  • Dr. Sara Garrido facilitated a training on "Psychological Decontamination" to the Arapahoe County Sheriff's Office for Investigations, Court Services, and the Patrol Impact Team

  • N-FA staff attended a special ceremony dedicated to the victims and their families, and in recognition of the members of the Aurora Police Department who responded to, investigated, and helped the community recover from the tragic events of July 20, 2012.  Dr. Nicoletti was honored to receive recognition from Chief Oates, on behalf of the entire staff, for providing support personnel in the aftermath of the Century 16 Theater Shooting.
  • Drs. Nicoletti, Axelrod, and Garrido took a tour of the various Colorado Correctional Industries (CCI) programs offered at the Colorado Department of Corrections, Cañon City Facility. CCI Services include: dog and wild horse training programs; goat, cow, and water buffalo milking stations; a Tilapia farm; vineyard; etc. We greatly appreciate the hospitality of our tour guides!
     
  • Drs. Nicoletti and Axelrod along with intern Shawn Knadler made the N-FA annual trip to Christchurch, New Zealand and McMurdo Station in Antarctica to provide psychological services.  We are currently compiling staff pictures from this deployment over the years-check them out on the Antarctica page.
